We're busy today putting the final touches to the interior of our second Hideaway on Plot 2, called Galmpton Creek. This is in preparation for @simontuttyphotography to come along next week and take some more pictures for us, which of course we'll be excitedly sharing! Here's a sneak peak of Galmpton Creek in the glorious sunshine last week, sitting alongside Greenway Hideaway on Plot 1. As you can see, maximising both the amount of outside space owners will enjoy, along with privacy is a real priority for this development.

So what's a #batcorridor and why are we busy constructing one? 🦇
Bats use woodland edges, hedgerows, rivers, tree-lined footpaths and other linear features as corridors, which allows them to fly from one area of countryside to another. These features act as navigational landmarks and provide protection from predators. As bats fly through the night, their echolocation calls bounce off these landscape features, helping them find their way.
So far over 250 metres of our bat corridor has been planted, with a mix of native species including Field Maple, Holly, Hazel, Hawthorn, Spindle, Privet, Sloe and Oak.

As well as our tree planting project during this #nationaltreeplantingweek, we have also started our hedging plantation scheme. We are planting a carefully selected mix which will provide nuts and berries to birds and wildlife, as well as blending in seamlessly with the natural environment each of the bespoke Hideaways sits in. Amongst our selection for planting we have:- Field Maple, Holly, Hazel, Dogwood, Hawthorn, Spindle, Privet, Sloe and Guelder Rose.

It’s currently #nationaltreeplantingweek and we’re busy with our own tree planting project here at River Dart Hideaway, even our youngest team members are enjoying giving a helping hand! Trees are best planted as the weather starts to become colder and the planting season lasts right up until March.

We’re planting some truly beautiful trees, including stunning Oak, Silver Birch, Crab Apple, Cherry and Rowan. These, like everything we do here have been carefully chosen to complement the natural environment and provide fruit and berries for the local wildlife.

We though it timely to share these images today as the phasing out of gas boilers for heating homes has been announced.

Here are the ground source heat pumps for the Hideaways currently being installed by local firm Cooks Energy. This renewable energy source will future proof the Hideaways and continue our efforts to ensure this development is as eco friendly and sustainable as we can make it.

This lovely October weather we’re enjoying is certainly helping us with our current project. We’re busy planting this native species wildflower turf around each of the Hideaways. As well as looking wonderful, this mix of wildflowers will encourage local wildlife and deter any non-native flowers and grasses.

There are 32 native wildflowers in this turf which include; Autumn Hawkbit, Bladder Campion, Common Sorrel, Lady’s Bedstraw, Meadow Cranesbill, Ox Eye Daisy, Red Campion and Yellow Rattle.

What’s our Story? As the second generation of an established and successful Devon based family holiday company, operating for over 40 years, we decided that now is the right time to develop our business further.

The increasing demands we see from a more discerning market for higher quality, luxury and sustainable holidays led us to create River Dart Hideaways.

Developed on the site of a former holiday park, our aim is to protect and preserve this treasured landscape, for both this and future generations, with sustainability and ecology at the fore.

Some of our own fondest childhood memories are of sailing the River Dart in a small dingy with family, exploring hidden coves and creeks along the way. Now our children enjoy the very same!

Working with our ecologist, we have collated an exciting plantation map for the River Dart Hideaway development. This is to ensure there is a broad mix of plant species, with a particular emphasis on berries that will provide food for wildlife and birds.

Over 350 meters of ‘dark corridor’ for bats and other wildlife has been installed and a badger set has been conserved.

We don't just talk about ecology and sustainability, it's of huge importance to us to implement these projects as responsible custodians of this beautiful place.
